Secondary school drop in's

Every secondary school in Sutton has a named school nurse and schools are offered the opportunity to have a school nurse ‘drop in’ session for students once a week. This is a confidential service and we will not discuss what your child has talked to us about with anyone including parents and teachers, unless we feel your child needs protection from serious harm, in these cases we would discuss the need to share information with the young person and seek consent where possible. Information may need to be shared with parents/guardians/school and social care.

Young people attending a drop in session under the age of 16 are assessed using Gillick Competence. They need to be able to understand the risks and benefits of the service that they are accessing, to retain information given to them and when information may be shared with others if there is a need to protect them from serious harm. Young people are encouraged to talk to their parents/guardians.

Students may attend for a one off contact or regularly depending on the advice and support needed. Advice and support can be given on a range of issues including:

  • Sex and relationships

  • Friendship issues

  • Smoking

  • Drugs

  • Alcohol

  • Lifestyle issues

  • Healthy eating

  • Weight management

  • Emotional health

  • Medical conditions

  • Anxiety

  • Depression
